4th International CLIVAR Climate of the 20th Century Workshop

13-15th March 2007

Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, Exeter, UK

Meeting Summary:

The CLIVAR International Climate of the 20th Century Project uses climate models to understand observed twentieth century climate variability, climate change and seasonal to decadal predictability. The project is jointly led by COLA and the Hadley Centre and currently brings together over 25 international modelling groups.

The 4th International Climate of the 20th Century Workshop will be held 13-15 March 2007 at the Hadley Centre of the Met Office, Exeter, UK. The workshop will review progress on coordinated climate simulations and analyses, present new studies of 20th century climate variability and plan new integrated model experiments with various degrees of ocean-atmosphere-land coupling. There will also be presentations and discussion of a new version of the HadISST sea-surface temperature and sea-ice data set due for release in 2009, which will have significantly higher resolution and incorporate new satellite data.

Submissions are invited on the following topics:
-- Observational analyses of climate variability and predictability, including SST and sea ice
-- The role of ocean, land and natural and anthropogenic external forcings in 20th century climate
-- Multi-model and model-observation comparisons
-- Climate extremes and prominent 20th century climatic events
-- Novel modelling techniques for simulating 20th century climate

Contributions on any of the above topics are welcome, but the number of participants is limited.
